How to Get Your Trade Business on Google Maps
By Opside Technology · Updated
What is a Google Business Profile and why does it matter for tradies?
A Google Business Profile is the free listing that shows your business in Google Maps and in the map results at the top of local searches. For searches like 'plumber near me', it often matters more than your website, because it's what people see and tap first.
How do I set up a Google Business Profile?
Go to Google Business Profile, search for your business name, and either claim the existing listing or create a new one. Enter your business name exactly as you trade, choose your main category, add your phone number and website, then complete Google's verification, which is often a short video showing your business.
- Sign in at business.google.com with a Google account you'll keep long-term
- Search for your business. Claim it if it exists, or add it if it doesn't
- Use your real trading name. Don't stuff keywords into it, which breaks Google's guidelines
- Pick the most specific primary category (e.g. 'Electrician' rather than 'Contractor')
- Complete verification. Google decides the method, often a video
Should a tradie show their address on Google?
Usually not. If customers don't visit you, set your profile up as a service-area business: hide your address and list the suburbs, towns or regions you cover instead. Only show an address if you have premises customers actually come to, like a workshop or showroom.
How do I rank higher in Google Maps?
Google ranks local results on relevance, distance and prominence. You can't change distance, but you can improve the others: complete every section, list all your services, add photos regularly, collect a steady stream of genuine reviews, reply to them, and keep your name, phone and area consistent with your website.
- Fill in services, description, hours and service area completely
- Add real job photos every few weeks
- Ask every happy customer for a review, and reply to all of them
- Post updates or offers occasionally to show the profile is active
- Link to your website and make sure the details match exactly
Common questions
Is a Google Business Profile free?
Yes. Creating and managing a Google Business Profile is free. Ads that appear above it are a separate, paid product.
Do I still need a website if I have a Google Business Profile?
Yes. Google uses your website to confirm what you do and where, and many customers click through to check you out before calling. The two work together.
Can someone manage my profile for me?
Yes. Opside's Google Business Profile add-on ($49/month) covers weekly posts, photos, Q&A upkeep and service-area optimisation.
