Website Subscription vs One-Off Build: Which Is Better?
By Opside Technology · Updated
What's the difference between a website subscription and a one-off build?
With a one-off build you pay a lump sum to have a site designed and built, then pay separately for hosting and any changes. With a subscription you pay a flat monthly fee with no build cost, and the provider designs, hosts, maintains and updates the site for as long as you subscribe.
Which is cheaper over time?
It depends on how long you keep the site. Using a typical $4,000 one-off build with $60/month hosting and care, against Opside Launch at $99/month, the subscription is cheaper for roughly the first 103 months. After that the one-off build costs less, as long as it doesn't need a redesign or paid changes.
| After | One-off build | Subscription | Cheaper |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 year | $4,720 | $1,188 | Subscription |
| 3 years | $6,160 | $3,564 | Subscription |
| 5 years | $7,600 | $5,940 | Subscription |
The one-off figures exclude paid changes after launch and any redesign. Most small business sites need a refresh every 3–5 years, which resets the cost of a one-off build.
When is a one-off build the better choice?
A one-off build makes sense if you have the cash available, your site rarely needs changing, you or someone you trust can manage hosting and updates, and you plan to keep the same site for five years or more. It's also the usual route for complex custom builds.
When is a subscription the better choice?
A subscription makes sense if you'd rather keep cash in the business, want changes handled without per-job invoices, don't want to think about hosting, security or backups, or want to start with a simple site and grow it. Being able to cancel also lowers the risk if your business changes.
What should I ask a website subscription provider?
Ask about the minimum term, what's included each month, how changes are handled, who owns the domain, and what happens to the site and content if you cancel. Terms vary widely: some providers lock you in for 12–24 months, while others, including Opside, are month-to-month.
- Is there a minimum term or setup fee?
- How many changes are included each month?
- Is the domain registered in my name?
- Can I take my content and images if I leave?
- What notice do I need to give to cancel?
Common questions
Do I own my website on a subscription?
It varies by provider, so always ask. Your domain should be registered in your name regardless, and your own content, like text you wrote and photos you supplied, is yours to take with you.
Is there a lock-in contract with Opside?
No. Opside plans are month-to-month with 30 days' notice, no build fee and no setup cost.
