How to Get More Google Reviews for Your Business

By Opside Technology · Updated

What's the best way to ask for a Google review?

Ask in person when the job's done and the customer is happy, then send a text the same day with a direct link to your Google review form. Keep the message short and personal. The direct link matters: every extra step loses people.

Example text: "Hi Sarah, thanks for having us out today. If you're happy with the job, a quick Google review would really help a small business like ours: [link]. Cheers, Mike"

How do I get my Google review link?

Open your Google Business Profile, either in Google Search or Maps while signed in, or in the Business Profile Manager, and choose 'Ask for reviews'. Google gives you a short link that opens the review form directly. Save it on your phone so it's always ready to send.

What does Google not allow when asking for reviews?

Google doesn't allow businesses to offer incentives for reviews (discounts, freebies or payment), to selectively ask only happy customers for reviews, or to discourage negative ones. Fake reviews can get reviews removed or your profile restricted. In New Zealand they can also breach the Fair Trading Act.

  • Don't offer discounts or gifts in exchange for a review
  • Don't filter customers so only happy ones get the review link
  • Don't write reviews for yourself or ask staff and family to
  • Do ask every customer, and let them say what they really think

Should I reply to Google reviews?

Yes, to all of them. Thank people for positive reviews, ideally mentioning the job. For negative reviews, reply calmly, acknowledge the issue and offer to sort it out offline. Future customers read your replies as much as the reviews themselves.

Common questions

How many Google reviews does a small business need?

There's no magic number, but a steady flow of recent reviews matters more than a big total from years ago. Aim to get a review from most jobs, and keep it going.

Can I automate review requests?

Yes, as long as every customer gets the request. Opside's Review Funnel add-on ($29/month) sends automated text and email requests after each job and shows your reviews on your site.
